The Great White North. The Yukon. A place where there are more bears than humans. It may be dark, cold and snowy, but you'll soon find out why that makes Yukon winters the entire better. Yukon is wild, mountainous and sparsely populated. The scenery is spectacular. The Yukon is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mount Logan.
Once you land in Whitehorse you can pick up your
rental car from the airport. Vehicle plates still contain an image of
a Klondike gold panner.
It’s not hard to find ways to fill a week in
the Yukon. There’s adventure in every direction! I spent my first day in
the Yukon getting to know Whitehorse, the capital city. The downtown area is
small, with the main tourist attractions within easy walking distance.
Continuing my walk in downtown Whitehorse I came to
the Old Log Church Museum. It’s one of the oldest
buildings in Whitehorse, dating back to 1900.
For the dinner we had a reservation at
restaurant named Miner's Daughter. It was my first time and can't
recommend it enough. My lamp chops selection was good and it was delicious. The
staff was friendly, got everything right, checked in with us at the right
times. I enjoyed my meal.
I spent my second day in the Miles Canyon for a hike. The Miles
Canyon area is minutes away from downtown Whitehorse. Near the entrance of the
canyon, where the Yukon River begins to narrow, is a suspension bridge which
allows for folks who want a shorter walk to Canyon City to cut out some of the
distance. The suspension bridge across Miles Canyon was built in 1922.
Christmas is the best time of the year; people get to
exchange gifts with friends and family. 12 Days of Christmas is a Fantastic
Christmas Market. So I can say please don't miss out your chance to buy some
presents to your loved ones.
An half hour drive outside of Whitehorse the Yukon
Wildlife Preserve is an outstanding opportunity to discover some of the most
majestic mammals on the continent. I walked through the property and got up
close, but not too personal. I saw massive bison, muskoxen, elk, caribou, tinhorn
sheep, moose, mountain goat, Arctic fox and Canada lynx. It has been a
very good opportunity for me to understand wildlife.
The Yukon is one the most spectacular places on the
planet. Roughly the size of Japan, it has a population of only 37,000 people.
It is the perfect destination for adventure with untouched wilderness.
My quest to see the Northern Lights began in 2018 and I’ve been chasing them every winter season since. In order to see the Northern Lights, you need a dark, clear night. They are visible from late September to early March. But the fact is, the Northern Lights are unpredictable. We’ve had clear nights when the Aurora forecast showed level 4 activity and we didn’t see anything.
A sundog is similar to a rainbow, and more common than
rainbows. Sometimes they look like bright rainbows on either side of the Sun.
Other times they are brighter and actually look like two extra Suns.
December is my birthday month. Now I am accepting
Birthday Gifts, Dinner and Drinks.
The day is going to end again, take a deep breath and
sleep tight while dreaming of me. Sweat dreams.
